      Civil War Enlistment Date: 27 Feb 1864
      Side Served: Union
      Enlisted in Company C, 28th Infantry Regiment Wisconsin as a Private on 27 Feb 1864.
      Died of disease Company C, 28th Infantry Regiment Wisconsin on 18 Jun 1864 at Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Hans survived only 4 1/2 months.

      On March 27, 1864, six companies of the 28th were sent with an expedition to destroy the pontoon bridge at Longview, on the Sabine River,
      but were left at Mount Elba to guard a bridge where they held a force of 1,500 in check and with the assistance of a small reinforcement repelled a charge.

      The 28th regiment was on guard and defense duty at Pine Bluff until winter, when it returned to Little Rock.

      The 28th was mustered out Aug. 3, 1865, at Brownsville. Its original strength was. 961. Gain by recruits, 144; substitutes, 32; total, 1,137.
      Loss by death, 230 - 13 killed or mortally wounded - 227 died of disease or accident; (Hans served in the 28th with his uncle, Hans Museus, and cousin, Carl Museus. They were mustered out in 1865 and returned to Wisconsin.)

Was paid $60. advance bounty. Bal unpaid $240. Died in Reg'tl Hospl. Pine Bluff Ark. June 18 of Typho Malaria Fever. He is in debted to W.H. Feller Sutler 28th Wis. $4.38.

      Certificate to be given to volunteers at the time of their discharge to enable them to receive their pay.
      I certify, on honor, that Hans A. Strem, a private of Captain T.N. Stevens Co. C of the 28th Reg of Wis Inf. volunteers born in Norway aged 23 years 5 feet 4 1/2 inches high; dark complexion, blue eyes, light hair, a farmer, enlisted at Oconomowoc Wis on the 27th day of Feb 1864 or was mustered in by T.T. Brand at Madison, Wis on the 11th day of March, 1864 to serve for a term of three years and having served honestly and faithfully with his Company in the field to the presesnt date, is now entitled to a discharge by reason of death. Died in Regimental Hospital at Pine Bluff, Arkansas June 18th 1864 of Typho Malarial Fever. He was paid $60 advance bounty, balance unpaid $240.
      The said Hans A. Strem was last paid by Paymaster (name not stated on discription list) to include the 27th day of March, 1864, and has pay due him from that time to the present date, and he is entitled to pay and subsistence for traveling to place of enrollment and whatever other allowances are authorized to volunteer soldiers or militia so discharged. He has received from the United States clothing amounting to $37.00 since enlistment. His clothing account has not been settled since enlistment.
      There is to be stopped from him, on account of the State of ____, for clothing. &c, received on entering service, nothing 00 dollars; and for other stoppages, viz: amounting to nothing 00 dallars; He has been furnished with no transportation in kind from the place of his dischargeto ____ and he has not been subsisted for traveling to his place of enrolment, up to the ____ 186_.
      He is indebted to Sutler Four 38/100 dollars. Fiven in triplicate at Pine Bluff Ark. this 18th day of May, 1864. T.N. Stevens Capt. 28th Wis Inf Vol. Commanding Conpany "C".
