    • Obituary for George West Posted 14 Jun 2008 by penwar716
THE INDEPENDENT Brodhead, Wisconsin Thursday, February 19, 1903
Died,-------at Brodhead, Wis, Friday, February 13, 1903, Mr. Geo. West, age 85 years, 1 month and six days.
Though Mr. West had been gradually failing in health, no one thought the end so near as he had no serious illness. He rose as usual, the morning of the 13th and after breakfasting, complained of not feeling well, and lay down again. In the early afternoon he became unconscious and passed away, with little suffering in the evening.
Mr. West was born in Brant, Erie Co, New York, January 7th 1818, and was the eldest of ten children born to his parents, John and Avis Bowen West. He passed the first twenty years of his life on the paternal estate in New York, where he received a common school education.
In 1838, he came to Green County, by way of the lakes, to Chicago, and proceeded the rest of the way on foot, to the township of Clarno. In the fall of 1839, he returned to his native state and married Susan Winchell on the first day of February, 1840, started on his return, accompanied by his wife. They came the entire distance by team, being one month and four days on their journey. They settled in Stephenson County, Illinois, on a claim of 60 acres, which he fenced, and on which he built a log cabin. In 1842, he sold his land and came to Sylvester, Green County, and purchased what has since been known as the West family homestead. Mr. West crossed the plains in 1850, with team and covered wagon, spending four months and four days on the trip. He built the first house in Nevada City, seventy miles from Sacramento, where he expected to make his home, but his wife and three children prevailed upon him to return. In 1874, he retired from farm life, and moved to Brodhead, where he has since lived.
George and Susan West were the parents of twelve children: Samuel, Louisa, Avis, George, Franklin, Clara, Mary, Alice, Ida, Nelson, and two who died in infancy.
Mrs. Susan West died Oct. 15, 1893, leaving behind her tender memories as a wife and mother. Sept. 30, 1894, Mr. West married Mrs. Eliza Jane Decker, together with whom he finished the remaining years of his life in contentment and happiness. He was a man of strong character and gentle disposition, always looking for the comfort of others and fearing lest he cause those about him the least trouble, and he was conscientious in his dealings with others.
He leaves to mourn his loss a loving wife, two sisters, three brothers, one son Samuel, four daughters: Mrs. Clara Watt, Mrs. Mary Vance, Mrs. Alice Northcraft, Mrs. Ida Smith; twenty-five grand-children, and eighteen great grandchildren.
The funeral services were held at the home Monday, Feb 16th, conducted by Rev. J. Andereck, of Juda, who used for a text, the words recorded in 1st Corinthians, 15th chapter, 26th verse: ?The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death?. The appropriate and comforting song service was rendered by Misses Anna and Katherine Stewart, Messrs. G. E. Dixon and Chas. Steele, with Mrs. W. F. Holcomb, accompanist. The following named persons served as pallbearers: M. M. McNair, D. Dunwiddie, D. Murdock, M. H. Williams, H. Bowen, and J. Bowen. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in Mount Vernon Cemetery, at Juda, to await the resurrection.
Besides the immediate family, there were present from a distance, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Trousdale, of Beloit; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hall, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Andereck of Juda, D. W. West and Mrs. Alice Harper of Monroe. CARD OF THANKS
We desire to return our heartfelt thanks to all who helped lighten the burden of sorrow during the sickness and death of the husband and father. Especial thanks are due to those who sent the beautiful floral offerings and to the singers for their comforting songs.

  • Notes
    • George West, of Brodhead, has been a resident of Green county since 1838. He was born in the town of Brant, Erie Co., N. Y., Jan. 7, 1818. His father, John West,
was born in the town of Scipio, Cayuga Co., N. Y., and was of Irish descent. His mother, Avie (Bowen) West was of Scotch origin and a native of Vermont.
His father died in Erie county in 1876; his mother still survives. The Parents of George had ten children of whom he was the eldest.

In 1838, when in his twenty-first year, he started westward, his destination being the town of Clarno in this county, where two maternal uncles, Thomas S. and William Bowen,
had already located. At Buffalo he took a deck passage for Chicago on the steamer MIichigan, commanded by Capt. Perry, paying from his small stock of money $5 for the passage.
From Chicago he proceeded most of the way on foot to the home of his relatives in Clarno. In the fall of 1839 he returned to his native State and married Susan Winchell of the town
of Brant, Erie county, and 'on the 1st day of February, 1840, started on his return, accompanied by his wife. They came the entire distance with a team, being one month and four days
on the journey. He first settled on the land presented him by his uncle, where they remained until 1842, when he sold his land and'removed to what is now the town of Sylvester, where
he made a claim of 160 acres which he improved and which became the homestead of his family and which he still owns, but he retired from farming in 1872 and removed to Brodhead.
His son, Samuel, now.occupies the homestead farm.

Mrs. West's parents were Ira and Betsy Winchell. The latter was born in Tioga Co., N. Y.

      Mr. and Mrs. West have had ten children, six of whom are now living-Samuel, born March 11, 1843; Louisa B., deceased, born Sept. 29, 1844; George F., born Jan. 14, 1846, deceased;
Avis E., born Nov. 29, 1847, now the wife of John W. Watt; Clara, born Sept. 7, 1849, widow of G. N. Trousdale; Mary, born April 24, 1852, wife of J. B. Nance; Alice E., born Nov. 29,
1853, wife of F. P. Northcraft; Ida M., born July 10, 1857; Nelson P., born Nov. 4, 1859, died at the age of nineteen; and Minnie, born Nov. 2, 1865, deceased.

SAMUEL WEST, a prosperous farmer and stock dealer of Sylvester township, Green county, lives on the old WEST homestead, about two miles north of Juda.

Mr. WEST is a son of George and Susan (WINCHELL) WEST, of Erie county, N.Y., where the father was born Jan. 7, 1818. George WEST was a son of John and Avis (BOWEN) WEST, the former a native of Cayuga county, N.Y., of Irish lineage, and the latter of Scottish descent, born in the State of Vermont. John WEST was the father of ten children: George is a retired farmer of Brodhead, Wis.; Armida, born Nov. 6, 1820, married Stephen ESTAY, of New York, and both are deceased; Susan, born Feb. 6, 1822, married Richard SHERMAN, of Erie county, N.Y.; Matthew, born May 31, 1824, married Sarah DECKER; Thomas S. B., born April 24, 1827, is living in Erie county; Sarah, born July 19, 1831, married Peter WILLOUGHBY, of New York; Elizabeth, born in June, 1833, married Nelson PARK, of Illinois; Jonathan and John (twins) were born Sept. 10, 1837; and Annis was born March 6, 1839.

George WEST, father of Samuel WEST, was married to Susan WINCHELL Sept. 1, 1840. Her parents, Ira and Betsy WINCHELL, were then living in New York. To this union came Samuel our subject; Louisa, born Sept. 29, 1844; George, Feb. 14, 1846; Avis E., Nov. 29, 1847 (died in 1896 at Hampton, Iowa); Clara, Sept. 7, 1849; Mary, April 24, 1854; Alice E., Nov. 27, 1855; Ida N., July 10, 1857; Nelson P., Nov. 10, 1859 (died aged nineteen years); Minnie, Nov. 2, 1865 (died in infancy).

Samuel WEST, whose name introduces this article, was born in the town of Sylvester, Green Co., Wis., March 11, 1845, five years before the admission of Wisconsin as a State into the Federal Union. On March 23, 1867, he married Miss Kate READ, of Juda, Wis., who was born June 2, 1849, in Cortland county, N.Y., daughter of Charles W. READ. Mr. READ came from New York to Genoa Junction, Wis., about 1852. He died June 14, 1899, in Gates, Oregon. To this union of our subject and wife have come five children: George, born April 8, 1869, married Miss Lettie HALL, of Sylvester; Mattie, born June 11, 1871, married Charles HALL, a merchant in Juda, where he is postmaster; Susan L., born Oct. 8, 1873, died March 18, 1896; Nettie M., born Feb. 16, 1876, married Eldridge ANDERECK, son of Rev. J. ANDERECK, of Juda; Bertha C., born Aug. 22, 1878, married Oscar MOLDENHAUER, of Juda.

Samuel WEST was reared on the far of Sylvester, and has memories of Wisconsin as a wilderness which few possess at the present time. On Aug. 9, 1862, he enlisted to Company K, 22d Wis. V.I., and served with honor and credit to the close of the war. He was with Gen. Sherman when he broke the backbone of the Rebellion, and was taken prisoner at Brentwood Station March 25, 1864, being incarcerated in Libby prison, but was soon paroled, and afterward exchanged. Honorably discharged June 12, 1865, he returned home with a record of which any man might be justly proud. For six months he was private orderly for Major Gen. Mower, and for six months previous was detailed as an orderly and employed on special duty, carrying the dispatches a portion of the time.

Mr. WEST has been engaged in farming, and has dealt in stock and fine horses for the last thirty years, having reared a number of the best horses ever bred in Green county. No citizen of the county has done more to improve the grade of its live stock. Our subject has served as school clerk, and chairman of the town, and is an honorable and esteemed member of the community. He has never united with any church, but is a splendid neighbor, a trustworthy friend, and a man of the most irreproachable domestic habits and character
